Why would a relatively free and open society like Athens seek to eliminate an elderly philosopher for propagating unconventional views, when he had been allowed to pursue his teaching most of his adult life?

Pericles, the democratic statesman and leader of Athens, gave this speech at the end of the first year of the Peloponnesian War. The aim of his speech is to celebrate Athens’ democratic tradition and political system. His speech begins with paying his respect to Athens’ ancestors and their customs and traditions which are represented as of divine origin. This questioning had not only a political but also a profound intellectual dimension. In such circumstances, institutions of rule and laws cannot be endowed with sacred or transcendental qualities. Without a moral, intellectual or political foundation for external authority that was independent of people’s decision-making, laws and institutions appear as just conventions. This meant that in Athens the concept of authority was demystified before it was developed. Of course, the failure to establish a concept of authority was not simply an intellectual problem.
