Walter Hasenclever’s Humanity represents the most ex treme form of the Expressionist reduction of language and its approximation to pure pantomime and silent film. It is also a most convincing example of the melodramatic pathos com mon to much of Expressionism, and it exemplifies the Passion play structure, as does Brecht’s Baal, for all their differences in spirit. Hasenclever’s work is also a good example of the great unevenness that often prevails within individual Expres sionist works—cheap banality standing next to grotesque power.
