The summer assignment for this particular year consisted of choosing a pair of books to read. One member of the pair had been designated as either a canonical or informational text. The second member of the pair had been written recently and correlated thematically with the classic or informational text. After reading the pair, the students were instructed to write an e-mail to the author of the more recently published book.
