Delivery records for this period are incomplete but BV9, BV16, BV20, BV29 and BV34 were among the earliest aircraft transferred to Wittmundhafen. BV16 was delivered on 29 March. Flying began on 15 March 1944. There was, however, a shortage of water needed to prepare the Me 163s for flight — for flushing the propellant tanks and diluting fuel which had spilled or leaked on to the ground. There was not even enough water in the Fliegerhorsts storage tanks for this purpose. The squadron, therefore, had to resort to drilling its own wells, but even after boring down to 100 metres these still did not deliver sufficient water.
All of them were transferred to the new squadron, which was to be based at Deelen, with effect from 1 March 1944. After that date the squadron became a fully autonomous unit in accordance with orders issued by the Oberkommando der L u f t w a f f e . While preparations for the transfer to the new airfield were being made, Olejnik received a secret telex from the office of the General der Jagdflieger informing him that, because of its position, Deelen could no longer be used for Me 163 operations and that the unit would be based instead at Wittmundhafen.
EKdo 16 also noted in December that the airfields at Wittmundhafen and Oranienburg were almost complete as well, and those at Husum and Brandenburg-Briest, where there were already many suitable buildings that could be used, were expected to be ready in the near future. It was anticipated that the airfield at Twente would be available at the end of March 1944 but there was still uncertainty as to whether the airfields at Achmer, Nordholz and Parchim would also be ready at that time, even though this had been promised by those in charge of the building work.
